Buzz Lightyear Blasts Into Space With NASA

It's a dream come true for Buzz Lightyear as Disney Parks and NASA send the 12-inch-tall action figure "to infinity and beyond!" Buzz Lightyear will blast off aboard Space Shuttle Discovery on mission STS-124. Liftoff from Kennedy Space Center is scheduled for 5:02 p.m. ET on May 31. Buzz will spend several months in space at the International Space Station (ISS) testing the limits of zero gravity before returning home to a hero's welcome at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida later this year.

Summer of Hidden Mysteries at Disneyland

Beginning May 22, deep in the heart of Adventureland the daring Dr. Jones will take Disneyland Park guests on a thrilling series of exploits in the season-long INDIANA JONES SUMMER OF HIDDEN MYSTERIES. Guests will be invited to become archaeologists, to interact with Indy himself and to journey deep into exotic jungles to unscramble clues, all the while learning what life is like for one of the greatest adventure heroes of all time.

Jewellery Line to be Launched in India

The India division of Disney Consumer Products has announced that it will launch jewellery in association with fine jewellery retailer and distrubutor, The Popley Group. The line of of neckpieces, earrings and rings will be inspired by Mickey and friends, Winnie the Pooh, Disney princesses, and other Disney iconic characters.

Disney World Completes Green Lodging Goal

All 23 hotels at Walt Disney World Resort and the company's Vero Beach resort have now been certified as meeting voluntary environmental guidelines. Disney's Yacht and Beach Club Resort recently earned the state's Green Lodging designation as the final two Disney Resort hotels to earn the designation. Disney's BoardWalk Inn was the first hotel in Florida to receive the Green Lodging designation in 2004.

Storm Struck to Open at Epcot in August 2008

Scheduled to debut at Epcot's Innoventions pavilion in late August, StormStruck: The Tale of Two Homes is designed to be fun -- yes, fun -- and educational. It seeks to motivate homeowners to be sure their homes hold up against hurricanes using an example of two homes hit during Hurricane Charley in 2004. StormStruck, an immersive digital surround-sound-theater experience, is based on what happened to these two houses -- and is designed to show homeowners that they can make their own homes safer: not by teaching the nitty-gritty of safe construction, but with a little Disney drama.

Google Earth & Disney World to Offer 3-D Maps

In a pioneering partnership, set to launch May 20th 2008, Google Earth and Walt Disney Parks and Resorts will make it easy to take a virtual trip to Walt Disney World's Epcot Center, Animal Kingdom, Disney's Hollywood Studios and 22 Disney hotels and resorts. Computer users will click on maps that show about 1,500 rides, restaurants and attractions in 3-D. The mega-map, with interactive features, will be available for free via both partner's web sites. "It's a virtual walk-through of the whole property … the most amazing virtual tour of any place in the world," Walt Disney Parks and Resorts chairman Jay Rasulo says.

2nd Tower at Contemporary Rises & is Renamed

The second Tower being built at Disney's Contemporary resort now stands 14 stories tall and shows signs of a bridge being built to link it with the Orgional Tower. The bridge will link the fifth floor of the New Tower with the fourth floor of the Orgional Tower. Additionally, "Bay Lake Tower" has replaced "Kingdom Tower" as the name of the New Tower. Desipite much visible progress and many official filings, Disney spokespeople remain mum about the project. The company documents still list the completion of the project in Fall 2009.

Narnia exhibit Re-opening Summer 2008

This summer, some of the characters from C.S. Lewis's timeless fantasy The Chronicles of Narnia come to life at Walt Disney World in Florida. Journey Into Narnia: Prince Caspian, an all-new soundstage attraction at Disney's Hollywood Studios, offers an in-depth and unique look into the making of "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian". Although the whole exhibit will open later this summer, the meet and greet experience with Prince Caspian is still planned to open May 16th.

Wide World of Sports to be Re-branded by ESPN

Walt Disney World Resort and ESPN are joining forces to re-brand Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex with the ESPN brand, creating an entertaining and immersive experience for the nearly 2 million athletes, coaches and spectators who come through the Disney sports complex each year. According to Jay Rasulo, chairman of Disney Parks and Resorts. "This project builds on their collaborative successes and positions them to explore more opportunities with ESPN to create new experiences for guests at Walt Disney World Resort."

Prince Caspian Meet & Greet To Open

"Prince Caspian" will soon be the newest prince to join the Disney's Hollywood Studios line-up. The "Prince Caspian" theme park character is scheduled to begin regular meet-and-greet appearances on May 16, 2008 at the showbiz-themed park. That same day, "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" is scheduled to debut in U.S. theaters.

Euro Disney SCA Reports First Half 2008 Results

Euro Disney S.C.A., operator of Disneyland Resort Paris, has reported the results for its consolidated group, for the first six months of fiscal year 2008 which ended March 31, 2008. Revenues increased 18pct to EUR 605 million, primarily reflecting growth in Resort operations - Positive operating margin of EUR 1 million, against a prior-year loss of EUR 36 million - Net loss reduced by 47pct to EUR 43 million.

Epcot to Host "Royal Quinceanera Weekend"

Walt Disney World is expanding its quinceanera party offerings this year by launching the first annual "Disney's Royal Quinceanera Weekend" at Epcot during Labor Day weekend 2008. The new event will be headlined by a lavish quinceanera ball and also feature a private viewing of Epcot's Illuminations fireworks spectacular. Packages will include stays that weekend at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort.

Analysts Encouraged by Park Numbers

Wall Street analysts were a bit more optimistic Monday about theme park results for entertainment giant Walt Disney Co., as investors await news on the company's second-quarter results due after the close on Tuesday. "Disney's theme park division remains investors' No. 1 concern, yet all signs point to Disney's fiscal second-quarter [ending in March] being quite strong, with theme parks likely to upside surprise," stated Richard Greenfield of Pali Research .

McDonald's Ends Contract at Animal Kingdom

Shortly after passing its 10 year bench mark, the Animal Kingdom is bidding farewell to it's familiar fast food counter service menu in Dinoland USA and replacing it with one of standard Disney fare. Disney has announced that McDonald's Restaurant has ceased supplying food items for the Restaurantosaurus dining location as of May 4, 2008. Disney has furthered that this change does not impact any other agreements between the two companies, specifically citing that the near-by Petrifries location will continue to serve McDonald's brand fries.

'It's a Small World' at Hong Kong Disneyland

Hong Kong Disneyland has opened the classic boat ride "It's a Small World" in a bid to boost sluggish attendance at the theme park. The new attraction launched April 28, 2008. The ride, which first appeared at the 1964 World Fair in New York, uniquely features 38 Disney characters in addition to moving and talking figures of children found at other incarnations of the attraction. The children sing a theme song in four new languages — Cantonese, Putonghua, Korean and Tagalog.

Tinker Bell Attraction at Disneyland, Fall 2008

Disneyland Resort President, Ed Grier, has announced that a Tinker Bell attraction will open at Disneyland in October 2008. Although lacking details of the attraction, the announcment did note that the opening of the attraction coincides with the October release of "Tinker Bell" on Disney DVD and Blu-ray.

Disney Purchases Back 220 Disney Stores

The Walt Disney Company today announced that it has acquired the Disney Store chain in North America from subsidiaries of The Children's Place Retail Stores, Inc. Disney has tentatively acquired back 220 Disney Stores in the United States and Disney Stores in Canada, with final number dependent upon further negotiations.Disney also obtained the right to close 98 Disney Stores in the United States and 2 Disney Stores in Canada without assuming the leases for those stores.
