Dick Cook Puts Mickey on a Diet

Walt Disney Studios chairman Dick Cook is fond of pointing out that of the top 100 movies of all time, 80 were (or could have been) a Disney-branded movie. That belief underlies last week's shakeup in the motion picture division, as the studio moves toward a scaled-back slate made up of easier-to-market, internationally relevant pics that build on the company's storied history of family entertainment. It's "Princess Diaries" vs. "Casanova," "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequels vs. "Hidalgo."

Disney to Slash 650 Jobs in Its Studio Division

The Walt Disney Co. is restructuring its studio division to emphasize blockbuster franchise films over more adult fare, a move that will mean slashing 650 jobs worldwide, the company announced. The restructuring will cut Disney's film output from about 18 a year to about a dozen. Of those, about 10 will be released under the Walt Disney Pictures banner, a proven family friendly brand that includes the successful "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise. The shift, the company explained, will allow Disney films to bolster the resources of other divisions. A hit like "Pirates of the Caribbean," for example, can spawn video games, action figures, cable TV shows and, in the case of "Pirates," give new life to an old Disney theme park attraction.

Epcot Plant Could Be Queen of Cucumbers

Cucumbers don't grow on trees, or do they? You may have to look twice when you tour The Land Pavilion at Epcot in Lake Buena Vista. On one side of the boat may be the world's largest-producing tomato plant and on the other side, the world's highest-yielding cucumber tree."We think we have established a world's record,'' says Yuqing Fan, an entomologist with Epcot Science at the Walt Disney World Co. and the one who has been nurturing the tree-size cucumber plant.Seeded on Dec. 12 and growing for more than half a year, the more than 6-foot-tall tree covered a 24-foot-wide and 30-foot-long trellis and yielded 2,563 cucumbers weighing 2,075 pounds. After a diligent search by Epcot horticulturists, there appears to be no other cucumber plant that has produced so many fruits. Plans are to submit these results to Guinness World Records in London.

Mr. Cook was charged with reinventing the studio last year. Robert A. Iger, Disney’s newly appointed chief executive, has said that his priorities would be global expansion and promoting Disney products across all the company’s divisions.

Disney Shares Fall on Analyst Downgrade

Walt Disney Co. shares had their biggest decline in three years after the company was downgraded by CIBC World Markets Inc., which cited slower growth in fiscal 2007 because of lower theme-park attendance and fewer television shows in syndication.
